. the other 20th anniversary that's coming up this week is the 20th anniversary of this. it was bill clinton signing what was called the omnibus budget reconciliation act of 1993. this was clinton's first budget at president. it had taken months to get it through congress. it was hugely unpopular. and it ended up having massive far-reaching implications that no one expected at the time. implications that in many ways still shape and define politics today. implications that some people, many republicans in particular, have never fully grappled with. this was the budget. clinton's 1993 budget that played a big role in wiping out deficits by the end of the decade, that let clinton hand off a surplus to bush in 2001, a budget that not one single member of the house or senate, zero, voted for, a budget that cemented them as anti-tax party and created the template for the behavior that became the basis for the gop obama-era strategy. in 1992 clinton campaigned for president on a promise to raise income taxes on the wealthiest americans. >> what is the vision of our new covenant? an america in whic

a lot of access to bill clinton. i'm not saying they're pushing bill clinton, but a lot of people excited about the idea of the clinton v. they did not try to hide their politics. so at some point, i was outed by lloyd grove of the "washington post." >> host: would have been nine? are you allowed to talk politics on the air? >> guest: i was encouraged because i wasn't the host of a political show. i was encouraged to talk about volleyball or auto repair. they want to talk about the music. i did have a lot of interviews with physicians who consider themselves to be political and occasionally would get in heated discussions, including, rollout, rage against the machine. he has an ideology, which is very confining. in his world, if you don't agree with him, you are the enemy. there's little room for actual free thought. i found that to be critical. when i came across people like that, i would call them on it. tom and i got him into it on the air with merely meant in another artist. mostly trying to figure out the limits of their freedom because you would assume rock stars would have
for probably a couple more questions. >> is it your sense that hillary clinton will run for president in 2016? how often do you talk to people that are close to her? >> she is firmly committed to being a private citizen to recharge her family's foundation and embrace the issues that have been the hallmark of her career which includes issues important to women and children globally. the time for reaching a decision will be down the road. i have talked to secretary clinton both personally and the people that are around her as i have talked to many of the other potential candidates for president and their people. the democratic party will get ready to stand up to the strongest possible and for structure to prepare our parties or whoever our nominee is. the good news is that the next resident of the united states after president obama's term will be a democrat. >> this is all ready begun. a lot of clinton defenders and allies say this is just the media falling back and we will have this replay of this hyper investigation of the 1990s. others have said this is scrutiny. it goes with the territory.
